Public Speaking
Course Description:
Public Speaking students will learn a variety of speaking techniques that will help in their other academic areas, social interactions, and career opportunities. It will be mandatory for students to give oral presentations on a variety of subjects and instances. The nature of this class is to explore controversial issues, but ideas must be supported with factual and credible documentation and must always be presented in an academic format. College bound students are encouraged to take this class since it is a requirement for all degrees. Students who are unwilling to speak in front of their peers should NOT take this course since presentations are the main source of credit in the course.
Presentation Guidelines:
Any speech turned in one day late will be subject to a 10% loss of points and a 40% loss of points thereafter. Students must make arrangements during Advisory or before or after school to make up a speech. They will not be given time during class to make up any given speech – unless time becomes available. If a student has an absence on the day of their given speech they MUST present the day they return to earn full credit. Any student having an UNEXCUSED absence on the day of their given speech will automatically be subject to 10% loss of points. 75% of the speeches in this course MUST be done in front of an audience of 5 or more.
